Progress on Outdoor Kitchen
Heading towards Self-Sufficiency
Chickens - Ten free-range chickens supply us with some of the eggs we need. Due to the vegetation in their diet, the yolks are bright yellow. The run was built on a shoe string and it shows. We need to build a new improved enclosure more inkeeping with our overall facility and allow the population to increase.
Turkeys - Instead of buying one turkey for Thanksgiving, we bought two males and three females. We ate one male for Thanksgiving Dinner and left the other male to live happily ever after with three girlfriends. By next November, we might be able sell our surplus to the American community in Kigali.
Cows - We had a new calf last month. He is finally venturing outside to look for his own grass. We now have all the milk we need for all of us. It is delicious. The herd is descended from a single female called Kibamba (means "spotty") that our friends from Home Church bought for us many years ago.
Pigs - Faith bought 9 pigs some time ago and kept them on rented property beyond Kigali airport and they have been breeding. We are preparing a new home for them at Lakeside and will be transporting them in December.
